Villa Elena - Brunello di Montalcino 2017 (750ml) ChambourcinOne of the great things about great vintages is how they elevate wines that might otherwise not be so interesting. We think that's what's happened here as 2015's richness and power give what otherwise might be a "meh" Brunello lovely character and depth. Dead classic Brunello aromas of cherry, strawberry, balsamic and fresh leather leads to a really pure and finessed palate of tangy ripe fruit, tobacco, and fresh earth. Plenty going on here right

Hints of licorice and chocolate with plums and berries

This wine was primarily barrel fermented and aged for 9 months in oak prior to bottling

while a touch of cocoa adds to the complexity

Because the wines are produced in such small lots

Vinification is made using the traditional Beaujolais process of carbonic fermentation before pressing and ageing

showing tremendous intensity and length on the finish

I really like the delineation and energy here plus the mid-palate concentration is better than usual

framed by fine tannins and a touch of spicy oak
